Is 40edo really straddle-7?

40edo's approximate harmonic 7 has about 29% relative error, but usually the cutoff for being a straddle-x system is 1/3 relative error or more on harmonic x. So, should 40edo really be considered straddle-7? hotcrystal0 14:20, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

It's approximately 1:2 straddle-7; it ordinarily wouldn't be considered dual-7. I deem preserving the mappings of 5, 7/3, and 11/3 from 40edo to be of more import in 40edo and supersets than patency however, and so if we're treating 40edo as dual-3 then we must treat it as dual-7 and dual-11 as well (i.e. as a subset of 80edo). I see this as an argument against the dual-3 mapping, however, and for simply including 7/3 and 11/3 in the subgroup, or alternatively for sticking to the patent val. I don't think that 80edo is obviously better in terms of its superset properties than 120edo is, for the record. --Lériendil (talk) 23:33, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
